* TOMORROW: Our next PTO meeting is February 9, 2010 at 6:30.  Minutes from previous meetings are posted on the PTO section of the Ira Jones website, http://www.psd202.org/jones/pto_min.htm .  They are a great source of information.

*THIS WEEK: Helping Hands Club will be accepting donations for the Will County Humane Society the week of February 8 – 12.  Drop off donations before school Feb 8-12.  Suggested items to donate include dry dog and/or cat food, leashes and collars, clean blankets and towels, paper towels, laundry detergent, liquid laundry and dish soap, toilet paper, pet nursers, 30 gallon plastic trash bags, cat litter, treats in unopened boxes and packages, new toys.

*THIS WEEK: Student Council “Send a Heart and Save a Heart “Fundraiser – Every 34 seconds a person in the United States dies from heart diseases.  Student Council is having a fundraiser to help the American Heart Association with research to find a cure.  You can purchase chocolate roses and heart-shaped ring-pops for $1.00 each from February 8 -12.  Send them to your best friend, your favorite teacher, your secret crush, someone special.

*WEDNESDAY -  Calling all talented Ira Jones students! It is time to show off your skills!  An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 10th from 2:30 until 3:15 in room 203 for all those interested in trying out for the talent show.  We are interested in all talents – musicians, gymnasts, and dancers. Whatever your talent is, we would love to see it.  Please see Ms. Jones or Mrs. Ault if you cannot attend the meeting or have questions. Those interested in participating in this year’s crew are also welcomed to attend the informational meeting on Wednesday.  Drama Club students do not need to attend the meeting.

*Attention 6th grade families!  Ira Jones Middle School sixth grade students, staff, and families have been selected to participate in a trial survey for the school district.  The purpose of the survey is to get a pulse on if the needs of our learning community members are being met.  The survey is linked from our school’s website, http://www.psd202.org/jones/. We ask for your support as we are honored to be a part of this trial.  Soon, the entire community will be taking the survey. Further details are attached.

* Chicago White Sox Fatherhood Essay Contest -Each year the Chicago White Sox sponsors an essay writing contest for students on "What My Father Means to Me." It is not just for fathers.  Grandfathers, step-fathers, father figures, etc. can be included for our students.  Students who are interested in participating in the 2010 Chicago White Sox Fatherhood Essay Contest may request a packet in the Main Office or the packet can be downloaded at http://www.4fathers.org/; the direct link to the packet is http://www.4fathers.org/pdfs/IFI%20Contest%20Packet%202010.pdf  The contest deadline is February 11th. Many prizes are offered.

*Ira Jones Battle of the Books - March 15-19 .  Ira Jones will be hosting its third annual Battle of the Books competition March 15-March 19.  This competition consists of rounds of questions about 10 selected books.  Students become experts on 2-3 books and compete on teams of 4-5 students.  Teams have formed and are preparing for the competition.  Students must be available to compete during the school day from March 15-March 19.

* NCAA Night - Attention 8th grade student-athletes! Interested in playing at the next level (in college)? Do you want to understand the recruiting process? Do you have questions about what you should be doing as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, as it relates to competing at the collegiate level? Do you know what resources are available to you at PNHS?

If you have these questions (or others), you are invited to attend NCAA Night. All ages of student-athletes and their parents can listen and/or ask questions about the NCAA and prepare for the future. The previous NCAA Night was canceled by the District back in early December due to poor weather.  It has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 24th at 6:30 p.m. in the PNHS Auditorium. Feel free to contact PNHS Athletic Office with any questions (815-609-6186). A flyer is attached.

*Intramurals – Ira Jones Intramurals will meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the main gym until 3:30 p.m. All students are invited to participate.

*The School Supply Store is open every Tuesday and Thursday during lunch periods.  It is located outside of the cafeteria across from the nurse’s office.

*H.O.T. Club [Homework or Tutoring] –Hot Club meets in room #134 on Monday's and Wednesday's after school until 3:30.  Please join us for homework help or tutoring in room 134 from 2:31 – 3:30.

* Eagles Ridin’ Right – How would you like to earn the opportunity to win VIP treatment for your bus?  You can earn the right for your bus to have VIP drop-off in front of the main entrance in the morning and VIP pick up in the afternoon.  All you have to do is show your social skills while on the bus.  Buses can earn Eagles Ridin’ Right tickets from their bus drivers if they exhibit good social skills on the bus ride to and from school.  The bus with the most tickets by the first Thursday of each month will win one week of VIP treatment.  Buses of students will only earn tickets if the whole bus exhibits good social skills.  So, let the competition begin!
