District 202 community honors veterans with host of activities
District 202 students and staff will learn about and pay tribute to veterans throughout the month of November in honor of Veterans Day.
In addition to classroom based activities, several schools have organized special assemblies and guests to allow local veterans to personally contribute to these lessons. The information for these Veterans Day assemblies is listed below.
Thomas Jefferson Elementary School will hold two special Veterans Day Assemblies at 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2009. The assemblies will feature Greg Baugh, a Thomas Jefferson parent who serves active duty in Afghanistan.
Baugh will present a Power Point to the students and staff about his experiences overseas. In addition, he will thank the students and staff for their support and show them how they helped the troops. Thomas Jefferson is located at 1900 Oxford Way, Joliet.
Ira Jones Middle School will host Sergio Estrada Jr. from the Department of Veterans Affairs at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. The assembly will take place in the school gymnasium, 15320 Wallin Drive, Plainfield.
Liberty Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day assembly at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Local veterans from the Bolingbrook VFW will speak to the students and staff about their experiences and why to celebrate Veterans Day. Liberty is located at 1401 Essington Road, Bolingbrook.
Aux Sable Middle School will honor veterans for their service throughout the day, on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2009. Students will view a Power Point presentation about Veterans Day that outlines the various branches of the military and features Aux Sable staff members who are veterans.
The students will also write letters to veterans thanking them for their service and dedication to the country. Patriotic music will even play between passing periods. In addition, Aux Sable students will collect items for care packages to be sent to U.S. servicemen and women serving overseas. Aux Sable is located at 2001 Wildspring Parkway, Joliet.
Indian Trail Middle School will host a Veterans Recognition Assembly at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2009. Local veterans will be honored for their service to the country and will share their personal stories with students. Indian Trail is located at 14723 South Eastern Avenue, Plainfield.
