| February 18, 2010 Poems of River View gifted students chosen for publication Ten River View Elementary School fifth grade gifted students will soon be published poets. The students participated in a poetry contest as part of Jean Dolezal's gifted class. For several weeks the students carried journals so they could jot down thoughts, peer edit, revise figurative language and perfect their poems. Dolezal then submitted the poems into a poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communications. Ten of the 13 submitted poems were chosen for publication in the company's "Poetry Anthology." "Unlike other poetry contests, Creative Communications is selective and does not publish every poem entered," Dolezal said. "The company says that you can consider it an honor if they accept your work." River View fifth graders Brennan Werner, Hannah Akkal, Tuyet Nguyen, Marissa Meadows, Claire Randall, Nicholas Prah, Chase Dewitt, Kaiya Hietikko, Lauren Edwards and Dakota Samaniego had their poems selected for publication. The student work was judged on literary merit, creativity and social significance. The quality of the students' writing reflected the time and effort put into their poems, Dolezal said. "These students put their hearts into this project and discovered the joy of working diligently to complete a challenge," Dolezal said. |
