Charles Reed E.S. kicks off eco-friendly fundraiser

Students and staff at Charles Reed Elementary School will soon begin selling eco-friendly products like CFL light bulbs and smart power strips at discounted prices, to benefit the community and school.

The school is kicking off its "Lights for Learning" fundraising efforts with three presentations at 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. All presentations will take place at the school, 2110 Clublands Parkway, Plainfield.

Students will sell mini-spiral and spiral compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs; capsule bulbs, CFL bulbs that have a cover that makes them look like a traditional light bulb; reflector light bulbs that are good for kitchen can lighting and outdoor lighting; 3-packs of spiral CFLs; a 3-way CFL bulb; and a color-changing LED night light. A CFL student desk lamp and a "smart" power strip are also available. All of the CFLs are high-quality, Energy Star certified bulbs.

The bulbs will be sold at regular retail prices, with no mark-up. Prices start at $1.25 for a mini-spiral bulb, and there is no shipping or handling charges. Charles Reed will receive 60 percent of each item sold.

Community members are invited to participate. Anyone interested in purchasing the eco-friendly products can attend the informational session at 6 p.m. on April 6, 2010, or can pick up an order form at the school during the regular school day.

"This fundraiser will help kids and families to learn more about how they can help the environment while the proceeds benefit the school," Charles Reed parent Portia Gallegos said.

"And community members have an easy way to order high-quality energy efficient products directly for their homes at a reasonable price," Gallegos said.

The fundraiser will run from Tuesday, April 6, 2010 through Friday, April 16, 2010.

"Anyone who participates will save money on energy bills, help the environment and at the same time help their local school," Gallegos said.
