Lincoln Elementary students & staff walk to fight diabetes

Seven hundred and fifty Lincoln Elementary School students and staff members marched around the school, chanting, holding signs and showing their support for the American Diabetes Association.

The school community walked to fight diabetes on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Several of the first through fifth grade students held homemade signs in support of finding a cure.

The students and staff raised $8,600 in pledges for their efforts to support the research, information and advocacy work of the American Diabetes Association.

The fundraiser has helped students to understand the disease and teach them that eating healthy and exercising can prevent the disease.

"We value the fact that the American Diabetes Association is a strong advocate for education, and as P.E. teachers we recognize that the knowledge from a lesson on diabetes has a significant impact on students' lifestyle choices," Lincoln P.E. teacher Nathan Warwick said.

The students learned how poor lifestyle choices can increase a person's chance of acquiring Type 2 diabetes and the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The students also set goals to participate in an hour or more of physical activity each day.

Lincoln will receive 15 percent of the funds it donates to the ADA to purchase physical education equipment.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy in every state and region of the country.
