Timber Ridge "chef's" Potato Skin Poppers win 2010 District 202 kids cooking contest

Timber Ridge seventh grader Daniel Holland's "Potato Skin Poppers" edged out the competition in District 202's annual kids cooking contest and were named "Best Overall Dish."

The recipe won him a gold medal at the third annual contest, held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Aux Sable Middle School. The kids cooking contest was sponsored by Sodexo, District 202's food service provider.

Holland competed against 12 other finalists from five District 202 middle schools, who were selected from dozens of applicants, to prepare their healthy meals or snacks based on their recipe submissions.

The dishes were rated by a panel of judges including Aux Sable Principal Sharon Alexander, Concordia College Sodexo Chef Aaron Torres, Sodexo Vice President Paul Komelasky and District 202 Food Service General Manager Eloise Sopka.

Recipes were judged on whether the food is health conscious, simple with kid-friendly preparation, and fun for kids.

Aux Sable sixth grade student Kathryn Simpson received a silver medal and the title of "Most Kid Friendly" recipe for her "tasty taco cups." Indian Trial sixth grade student Kenya Perez received a bronze medal and the title of "Most Creative" dish for her "orange cups."

All three winners received a teen cookbook which included their recipes as well as the recipes of the other contestants.

A copy of the cookbook will be sent to each middle school's Family and Consumer Science department to encourage students to choose healthy options and to help them prepare healthy snacks.
