Heritage Grove M.S. teams place in IL Math League Contest

Heritage Grove Middle School accelerated sixth, seventh and eighth grade students competed and did well in the annual Illinois Math League contest.

In February, 288 Heritage Grove sixth, seventh and eighth grade accelerated math students took a 30 minute exam. The 40 multiple-choice questions are designed to be challenging.

"We decided to administer the exam to see how our students compare," Heritage Grove Math teacher Tom De Geus said. "The students answer questions of varying difficulty that are not related to our curriculum."

Three hundred and three middle and high schools participated in this year's contest. Heritage Grove's test results were scored according to grade level in a five county area.

In the Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, Monroe and Will county region, the Heritage Grove eighth grade students placed first overall, the seventh grade students placed fourth overall, and the sixth grade students placed third overall.

In addition, three students' scores earned them individual regional honors. Heritage Grove sixth grade student Jessica Phung placed third, seventh grade student Landon Glunt placed fourth, and Phung's older brother, eighth grade student Jenson Phung, placed second.

Heritage Grove will receive a plaque acknowledging the eighth grade team's first place finish.

This is the second year all accelerated math students at Heritage Grove participated in the contest, and the third year students at the school have participated.

"This is the best we've done with scores and placement," De Geus said.
