Eagle Pointe E.S. challenges families to sharpen math skills

Eagle Pointe Elementary School is challenging families and students to sharpen their math skills in preparation for the school's math night.

The Eagle Pointe Family Math night will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the school, 24562 Norwood Drive, Plainfield. Math night is free and open to all Eagle Pointe families.

Students and their parents will meet in the school media center for a general overview of the evening. Then they will adjourn into classrooms where 30 fourth grade volunteers will explain how to play various math games. The math activities focus on number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, probability and data analysis.

Members of the Eagle Pointe PTO will give each family that attends Math Night a free math kit with flashcards, a ruler, counters, play money, dice, a multiplications chart and a hundreds chart. Game rules and game boards used for any of the games taught at Math Night will also be available for parents to collect.

"The event is designed to help students strengthen their math skills by encouraging game play and hands-on activities that families can play at home," Eagle Pointe fourth grade teacher Kristen Salgado said. "This event was planned as a result of one of our school improvement goals through our school's math committee."
