Education Partners Newsletter

Education Partners - October 16, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

We're at that weird point when professional basketball, baseball, football, soccer and hockey all briefly overlap - a sure sign of fall! Hope yours is going well. We have our usual weekly sampling of news and photos from the week. But first a few important points:

  • Here are the Board of Education meeting notes for the October 13, 2009 meeting.
  • Congratulations to the Plainfield North High School Boys Cross Country team which raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society. The team decided to turn its  October 8, 2009 practice into a run-a-thon to benefit the charity, and solicited sponsorships from friends, family and staff members in exchange for each lap completed in an hour.
  • Kudos as well to Meadow View Elementary School Principal Dr. Don McKinney, who raised about $3,000 for United Way by taking pledges for his participation in last Sunday's Chicago Marathon.
  • Updating an earlier note, Bonnie McBeth Learning Center students raised $6,072.67 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through its recent Hop-a-Thon. Kudos to everyone involved.
  • Congratulations to Plainfield East High School junior Erick Urbieta who was named the Trib Local newspaper's High School football Player of the Month for September. This is a  new honor. Erick is being recognized for his outstanding athletic achievements. As well, the winning student's high school receives $500 from the promotion's sponsor.

Virtual Backpack

We've posted three new fliers this week on the District 202 "Virtual Backpack." Check out the Virtual Backpack section of this newsletter to review and download this week's materials, and please spread the word with family and friends about this great new "green" tool. Click here for more information about the Virtual Backpack: http://www.psd202.org/vbackpack.htm

Finally...
***As we shared in a special Education Partners dispatch on Tuesday, District 202 does not intend to send letters or Connect-ED calls for individual cases of H1N1. Rather, we're going to continue to emphasize education about the virus, prevention and appropriate treatment if your children do indeed get sick. Here is that original note, which is also posted on the web sites for the district and each school. http://www.psd202.org/Newsletter/0910/10_14_09.htm

Also, today we posted a great H1N1-related newspaper column from an Edward Hospital doctor published in the Plainfield Enterprise. Click here: Doctor Says: "H1N1 No More Dangerous than Regular Flu"

Finally, another letter from Dr. Harper about the H1N1 virus and our plans to address it will be coming home and being posted on the Internet early next week. Please watch for it.

Have a great weekend

Meadow View United Way Run

All students and staff lined the hallways of Meadow View Elementary School on Friday, October 9, 2009, to surprise Principal Dr. Don McKinney.

As part of Meadow View's United Way Campaign this year, Dr. McKinney solicited pledges for his marathon run that he will donate to United Way.

The Meadow View community pledged close to $3,000 for United Way in support of McKinney's first marathon run.
