Education Partners - October 8, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

This week's issue is coming a little early because of some logistical complications on our end, yet it still contains a full week's worth of news, photos and information. What a great deal in a tough economy! First, a few important notes:
  • The Board of Education will meet in regular session on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Heritage Grove Middle School, 12425 S. Van Dyke Road, Plainfield. The public part of the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The full agenda will be posted Friday afternoon on the district web site (www.psd202.org) under "Board Docs."
  • District 202 has identified about $2 million in potential savings for this year as part of our work to eliminate the projected $16 million operating fund deficit in this year's budget. Click here for more information: http://news.psd202.org/news/display.php?newsitem=1308
  • Plainfield Academy teacher Karyn Holstead this week received $1,000 for classroom supplies from Office Max as part of its "A Day Made Better" campaign, a one-day annual event highlighting the fact that teachers often must spend their own money for essential supplies. Karyn was one of about 1,100 teachers picked this year. Congratulations to Karyn.
  • Kudos to the Plainfield High School-Central Campus boys golf team for winning the Southwest Prairie Conference championship. Last year, Plainfield South won the conference title. Way to keep it in the family!
  • Speaking of PSHS, girls golf team member junior Samantha Cichy last week was named the Southwest Prairie Conference Most Valuable Player. Kudos to "Sam"!
  • Congratulations to District 202's newest Doctor: Heritage Grove Middle School 6th grade language arts teacher Dottie Williams learned this week that she successfully defended her dissertation. "Mrs." Williams is now "Dr." Williams.
  • The Plainfield North High School Band Boosters will host a chili dinner from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, October 9, 2009 in the school cafeteria before the varsity football game. For a meager $5, guests will get a bowl of chili, drink, bread, and a side of potato chips or Fritos.
  • Congratulations to Charles Reed Elementary School 3rd grader Zari Carson, who won first place in the Third Grade category of the City of Joliet’s 2009 Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Zari was District 202's only winner in this year's contest.
  • Our friends at the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency will host another Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class for the community in November. Residents will learn how to care for themselves, family and neighbors in case of a disaster at home or work. The class is free to anyone who lives and/or works in Plainfield over 18 years old. The class culminates with a mock disaster drill in which all attendees test their skills. Visit the Plainfield CERT website at www.plainfieldcert.org for more information.
  • The Jon Balke Student Art Gallery at the district administrative center is proud to feature works from Bonnie McBeth Learning Center; Central, Creekside and Freedom elementary schools; and John F. Kennedy Middle School during October.
  • Congratulations to the Joliet-Bolingbrook Special Recreation Association (JBSRA) Jaguars volleyball team, for advancing to the state competition being held in Rockford on October 24 and 25, 2009. The JBSRA Jaguars includes several District 202 students.

Liberty Animal Cells

Fifth graders in Lori Petree's class at Liberty Elementary School work with the supplies they brought in to create their very own animal cells.

Liberty Elementary School parent volunteer Henry Gehrhardt helps his son carve a hole into the center of a styrofoam ball while Liberty fifth grade teacher Lori Petree helps a student do the same to hers. Liberty's Parent Diversity Group has instituted "Dedicated and Devoted to Students" or DADS days this October and next March to increase the number of male volunteers at the school.
