Education Partners - November 18, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

Logistical challenges this week require us to send this regular dispatch a litle early. Still we lack for nothing when it comes to news, photos and information about District 202. First, a few important notes:

  • The Board of Education will meet in regular session on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the district administrative center, 15732 Howard Street, Plainfield. The public part of the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The full agenda will be posted Friday afternoon under "Board Docs" on the district web site (www.psd202.org)
  • We've posted the 2009-10 District 202 Middle School First Quarter Honor Roll under "District 202 Excels."
  • Alert to Heritage Grove Middle School families: the school is hosting its annual fall book fair through Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in the Media Center.  The book fair will be open during school hours and during scheduled parent conference times. All proceeds from this book fair will be used to purchase additional materials for the Media Center.
  • Kudos to the Aux Sable Middle School students, staff and families who donated 4,964 items as part of the school's Veterans Day activities, for Operation Care Package, to benefit our military overseas.
  • Kudos as well to the Aux Sable Middle School 7th Grade Choir, which made 37 holiday cards for a five-year-old boy named Noah, who is in the hospital with brain cancer. The Choir members learned about Noah from another Aux Sable student. What a wonderful gesture!
  • Congratulations and best luck to Plainfield High School-Central Campus junior Madeline "Maddie" Mikrut will compete in this weekend's state swimming meet at New Trier High School. She will swim the 100 meter Butterfly. Maddie is the first Plainfield Swimming Co-op member to qualify for state competition since 2004.
  • The 2009-2010 Great Read Committee is kicking off this year's program with some creativity - and a tasty holiday season beverage! Acclaimed author Luis Urrea will formally begin the 2009-2010 Great Read program with a reading/discussion/signing of his book, "Into the Beautiful North" at 7 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Joliet Barnes and Noble store, 2621 Plainfield Road, Joliet.
Area students and adults are invited and encouraged to suggest a name for a special drink - white cinnamon hot chocolate - being made in honor of Urrea, whose father is Mexican and mother is American.  The winning student (prekindergarten through high school) will receive a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. The winning adult (18 years and older) will receive a signed copy of "Into the Beautiful North." Entries must be received by 5 p.m. December 1, 2009. Please visit the Great Read web site for more information and to submit your ideas to name this special beverage: www.psd202.org/greatread

Budget Deficit Elimination Strategy

Thanks to everyone who has already shared ideas for ways to reduce the district's projected $16 million operating budget deficit. Every single suggestion is being shared with the superintendent and Board of Education. Submit your ideas/suggestions for reducing costs through this special page:  District Deficit Elimination Strategy

Finally...

Plainfield South High School must postpone its production of "Noises Off", which was scheduled to open this weekend, because of a minor injury of one of the main cast members. The show will now be performed Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 2:30 p.m.  We hope we're not jinxing the PSHS cast and crew when we say, "Break a leg!"

Have a great weekend.

Meadow View Disguised Turkeys

First grade students in Kim Schuelke's class at Meadow View Elementary school created disguised turkeys. With the turkeys, the students also had to write a paragraph about who their turkey is and why it cannot be eaten.

The turkeys are part of the MVTPP or the Meadow View Turkey Protection Program.
