Education Partners - November 6, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

And welcome to the balmy month of November. Let's see - no sun to speak of in October, and this weekend it's going to approach 70 degrees. You have to love Chicago weather... Well, at least the District 202 news is always consistent - plentiful, and on time. First, a few important points:
  • The Board of Education will meet in regular session Monday, November 9, 2009 at Meadow View Elementary School, 2501 Mirage Ave., Plainfield. The public part of the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The full agenda will be posted later today on the district web site (www.psd202.org) under "Board Docs."
  • The Jon W. Balke Art Gallery is proud to feature works in November from students at Crystal Lawns, Lakewood Falls, Lincoln and Walker's Grove elementary schools, and Plainfield North High School. The Gallery is located in the district administrative center, 15732 Howard Street, Plainfield. Check it out. Our students' talent is amazing!
  • Congratulations and best luck to the Plainfield South High School boys cross country team, and PNHS junior Andrew Sandoval, who will all compete at the state cross country meet tomorrow, Saturday, November 7, 2009 in Peoria.
  • Kudos to the Joliet-Bolingbrook Special Recreation Association (JBSRA) "Jaguars", who earned gold medals at the recent Special Olympics Fall Games for volleyball. The Jaguars include several District 202 middle and high school students.
  • The PNHS/PSHS Key Clubs recently organized a food drive to benefit the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry. Together, they collected and donated nearly 3,300 food items. Congratulations on this great effort.
  • Speaking of great initiatives, Heritage Grove Middle School has also been collecting non-perishable and personal items for about a month for our troops overseas, through the Operation Care Package program of Joliet, through the Carillon Lakes veterans.  Kudos to everyone involved.
  • Mark your calendars: The Jingle Bell Run and Walk for Arthritis will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Ira Jones Middle School, 15320 Wallin Drive, Plainfield. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. The 5K race/walk starts at 9 a.m. and the Kids Dash starts at 10:15 a.m. Online registration through December 5, 2009 is $20; $25 the day of. Every participant will get jingle bells for their shoes and the first 400 will receive a long sleeve commemmorative shirt. Awards will be given. Finally...

As you know, District 202 is facing a projected $16 million operating fund deficit this year, because of the weak economy and problems with the state education funding system. Work has already started to eliminate this shortfall. Lots of news will follow in the coming months, and we will do our very best to keep our community informed.

To that end, this week we posted a District Deficit Elimination Strategy on the front page of the district web site. Here you will find a concise overview of "our problem, our plan, and our progress" toward eliminating the deficit.

Not only do we intend to keep our community informed, we also welcome your input. This page includes a means for you to share your thoughts, questions, and even suggestions for possible reductions.

We hope you find this information helpful.

Thanks, and have a good weekend.
