Education Partners - December 18, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

Another busy week as we head into the winter break. Lots of important news, useful information and great photos posted below. First, a few notes:

  • Here are the December 14, 2009 Board of Education meeting notes. The Board took action on three major items. Two of them will save the district significant money
  • The Board approved a special one-year agreement with the Association of Plainfield Teachers that is for less money than what our financial advisors projected: http://news.psd202.org/news/display.php?newsitem=1404
  • The Board approved the 2009 levy, which is the district's official "request" for our share of local property taxes: http://news.psd202.org/news/display.php?newsitem=1405
  • And the Board approved ordering new district-wide Language Arts resources, even while the proposed new resources are still on 30-day public review. Doing so will save the district about $4.5 million. http://news.psd202.org/news/display.php?newsitem=1406
  • Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Harper spoke about all three of these items with WJOL's Isaac Sanken this week. Click here to listen in: http://www.psd202.org/Community/columns/radio/harper_12-15-09.mp3
  • In other very big news: kudos to JFK Middle School 8th grade teacher Dr. Amber Bechard; Meadow View Elememtary School early elementary teacher Cecilia Buddy; and Walker's Grove Elementary School 5th school teacher Chris Klein, who all earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. NBPTS certification is widely considered the highest professional recognition a teacher can achieve.
  • Kudos to the JFK students, staff and families who collected and donated over 1,000 non-perishable food items to the Green Harvest Food pantry in Plainfield and enough .
  • Kudos as well to the Plainfield South High School art department which raised about $607 for needy PSHS families through its "Empty Bowl" fund raiser. PSHS art students painted and decorated ceramic bowls which were sold for $10 in trade for a light (and very tasty) lunch.

Finally...

As we head into the winter break, please remember that District 202 officials and staff continue to look for ways to reduce the district's projected $16 million operating fund deficit. We very much want your input. Thanks to everyone who has already shared ideas. Every single suggestion is being shared with the superintendent and Board of Education.

Please Submit your ideas/suggestions for reducing costs through this special page:  District Deficit Elimination Strategy.

Have a safe, restful and joyful winter break. Happy Holidays!

Each class at Creekside Elementary and some of the faculty created and decorated snowmen using styrofoam balls.
