Education Partners - December 30, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

Between the bad economy, the budget deficit, H1N1 and a long list of other issues, it's certainly understandable that some - lots? - of people will look back at 2009 with trepidation, if at all.

Yet, in District 202 there is always something good that justifies all the challenges: our students, teachers and staff members.

Without doubt, 2010 is going to be difficult, but it will be better because of you - our community and partners in learning and teaching. Thank YOU for everything you do to help all of our students achieve, succeed and grow.

In lieu of "new news" this week, we want to emphasize a few important ongoing matters:

  • If you haven't seen it in the local papers yet, please make sure to read Dr. Harper's community column for this month, addressing the ongoing work to reduce the projected $16 million operating fund deficit: http://www.psd202.org/Community/columns/1209.pdf
  • Speaking of the deficit: thanks to everyone who has shared ideas to save money. So far, we've gotten nearly 300 suggestions. Please keep them coming. Every comment is being shared, unedited and word-for-word, with the superintendent and Board of Education: District Deficit Elimination Strategy
  • As we head into the coldest part of winter, please remember to:

    1. update your contact information for Connect-ED either through our online system or by calling your school(s): http://www.psd202.org/connected.htm

    2. dress children appropriately to be outdoors if they ride the bus - busses are affected by traffic and road conditions too, so they sometimes run late.

    3. listen to local and Chicago-regional media, and check the district web site (www.psd202.org) for updated school closing information. Remember, Connect-ED is a very powerful tool, but it is not our only tool. Information about School Closings is posted on the front page of the district web site and will remain there through the winter season.

Freedom Kindergarten Gingerbread Day

Kindergarten students at Freedom Elementary School enjoyed Gingerbread Day on Thursday, December 17, 2009.

On Gingerbread Day, the students went from room to room. Each kindergarten classroom had two activities.

The activities included hearing one of six different Gingerbread stories and then each child writing about their favorite one, graphing their favorite story, making a gingerbread ornament to take home, reading and coloring a small book about what the gingerbread man wears, and doing a gingerbread crossword.
