Education Partners - December 4, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

Hope your Thanksgiving was full with every good thing - not the least of which is food, of course! Speaking of "good things," we have our usual heaping slice of news, information and photos. First, a few important notes:

  • The Board of Education will meet in special session at 7 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2009 at the district administrative center, 15732 Howard Street. The Board will meet in closed session to discuss "the appointment, employment, compensation, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body"; and "pending, probably, or imminent litigation."
  • Kudos to Lakewood Falls Elementary School students and families who donated 12 boxes of food for the Plainfield High School-Central Campus PTO's 17th annual food drive for needy families.
  • Congratulations to Plainfield South High School junior running back Dondre Adams and Plainfield North High School junior running back Kapri Bibbs, who were both named ti the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association All-State team last weekend.
  • 'Tis the season for good deeds: the Plainfield East High School Student Council, Key Club, and NHS collected over 4,100 items through a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the Plainfield InterFaith Food Pantry.
  • Likewise, Heritage Grove Middle School collected and donated 27 boxes of food for the Interfaith Food Pantry, through its sixth grade/Student Council food drive.
  • And one more "good deed" that deserves notice: more than 32 staff members from Drauden Point and Aux Sable middle schools and Charles Reed, Ridge and Thomas Jefferson elementary schools, all in District 202's "Blue House", are volunteering to collect money to help those in need. They will collect donations for the Salvation Army from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2009, outside of the Jewel Osco on Route 59 and Caton Farm Road. See the item below for more information.
  • Plan to attend the 2009-2010 Great Read Committee kick off event Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Joliet Barnes and Noble store, 2621 Plainfield Road, Joliet. Great Read Committee members will read age-appropriate stories to early elementary-age children at 6 p.m. and a book talk for older students (late elementary and middle school age.) Then, acclaimed author Luis Urrea will read and sign his book, "Into the Beautiful North" at 7 p.m. Finally, the winner of the contest to name a new holiday beverage in Mr. Urrea's honor will also be announced. The winning child will receive a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card, and the winning adult will receive a free, signed copy of "Into the Beautiful North."
