District 202 Education Partners, hello...
Spring, anyone?
Well, while we wait, we have the usual plethora of district news, photos and information. First, several important points:
***The
Board of Education will meet in regular session Monday, February 8, 2010 in the gymnasium at
Timber Ridge Middle School, 2101 Bronk Road, Plainfield. The public part of the meeting (including time for citizens comments)
will start at 7:30 p.m. The Deficit Reduction Proposal is listed under "For Action" on the agenda. Additional parking will be available at River View Elementary School, 2097 Bronk Road. The full agenda will be posted on the district web site (
www.psd202.org) under "Board Docs."
- Congratulations to the Plainfield South High School boys bowling team, for winning the state title last weekend. This is the first time that a District 202 team (as opposed to individual athletes) has won a state title. Stories about the team's victory will be shown at 10:30 p.m. tonight (Friday) on Comcast Sportsnet; and 10 p.m. Sunday on ABC Channel 7.
- The Great Read 2009-2010 continues with another opportunity to meet acclaimed author Luis Urrea, whose book, "Into the Beautiful North" is the focus of this year's program. Mr. Urrea will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the The Plainfield Public Library, 15025 S. Illinois St. Plainfield, IL 60544. Click here for more: http://www.psd202.org/greatread/
- This month, the Jon Balke Student Art Gallery is proud to feature works from students at Grand Prairie and Ridge elementary schools, and Aux Sable and Heritage Grove middle schools. As always, the quality of the work, and the talent of our students is breathtaking. Please take a look the next time you visit the District Administrative Center.
- Kudos to everyone involved in, and who supported, this year's Plainfield High School-Central Campus PTSO Needy Family Drive over the holiday season. This year's campaign helped 40 District 202 families have a better holiday season.
- Plainfield North High School Principal Ray Epperson has been asked to officiate the State Finals Dual Wrestling Meet Tournament on February 27, 2010. While not directly tied to his current role, this is a great honor for Mr. Epperson who has a long association with wrestling, as a high school and college athlete, then as a high school coach. His teams won individual state champions qualified for state. This is his 13th year as an official. Kudos to Mr. Epperson.
- Best luck to the PSHS Varsity Cougarettes who are competing this weekend in the Nationals in Florida. They have also qualified for two dances at State - another significant first for PSHS.
- Speaking of athletic excellence, District 202 graduate Lisa Chesson will be playing for the United States Women's Hockey team in the upcoming Winter Olympics. Her mom, and Lakewood Falls Elementary School secretary Mary Ann Chesson, will be blogging about this momentous occasion from the Olympics. Here is the link: www.lisa11usaolympics.com

Budget Deficit Elimination Strategy
Thanks to everyone who has already shared ideas for ways to
reduce the district's projected $16 million operating budget deficit. We've gotten more than 1,300 individual suggestions, and each of them is being shared with the superintendent and Board of Education. Submit your ideas/suggestions for reducing costs through this special page:

Finally...
Remember that
April 1, 2010 is Census Day in America. The Census is very, very important inasmuch as it helps local governments get more federal money, which is doled out based on population. District 202 will be working with our local governments to provide information about the Census and to encourage our families to complete and return the form, so that OUR communities will benefit as much as we possibly can. Have a great weekend.
