District 202 Education Partners, hello...
Less than two weeks before the new school year begins...is it just me (or my advancing age?) or did summer seem to go faster this year? Well, no matter how fast the seasons change, the District 202 news never stops. First, though, a few important notes:
- Another reminder that the Board of Education's regular meeting for this month has been moved from Monday, August 17 to Thursday, August 27 because of scheduling conflicts.
- Devotion to Accuracy Department, Part 1: a few weeks ago I identified Plainfield North High School's Nick DiForte as the head football coach. Wrong! He is the head boys basketball coach. My apologies to Nick.
- Devotion to Accuracy Department, Part 2: a few changes were made to the transportation schedule after printing started on the new issue of "The Core" newsletter. These changes affect Plainfield Academy, the "Elementary Star Plus Program" and early childhood programs. The hard copy of the newsletter you will receive in your mail box will have wrong information. The version on the district web site has been corrected: August 2009 (Volume II, Issue V)
- We posted a story about Ira Jones Middle School working with area churches, among other community partners, to fill and distribute 35 backpacks to students. Ira is just one of several of our schools doing initiatives like this with the help of the Plainfield Ministerial Association. We have formed a partnership with the PMA to help families who have been hit hard by the economy. We want to thank them for their support. You will hear more about this partnership throughout the school year.
- FYI, we're implementing an online "Virtual Backpack" system this year that will allow non-profit groups to post fliers for students and staff online, rather than making and distributing thousands of pieces of paper. This will save a huge amount of paper, time, money and work for everyone involved. We sent a letter about this great new system to those groups that distributed fliers last year. That letter is posted on the front page of our web site: Community Letter about Distributing Fliers to Students/Staff
- Kudos to our district technology department for saving taxpayers $313,713.65 in technology and telecommunications-related expenses in 2008-2009 through the federal "e-rate" program. We expect to save another $361,391.96 this year, and we've saved $1,507,981.21 through the "e-rate" program since 2003. Saving money is always cause for celebration, and especially during tough economic times.

Finally...
The
new school year starts August 25. Please make sure your children are
properly registered and all required health and physical records are on file. This is critically important, so please read this information and take care of this as soon as possible, so the new school year can start as smoothly as possible for you, your child and the district.
