Education Partners - August 28, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello!

Hope you've had a good first week of the 2009-2010 school year. It's been very busy here, as the news below will indicate. First, though, a few important notes:

  • Here are the August 27, 2009 Board of Education Meeting Notes. The Board received two very important reports:
  • One is on the proposed 2009-2010 budget, which shows a $16 million projected operating deficit, but still supports our work to improve learning, teaching and achievement for our students;
  • The second, is the annual report on our student achievement on the state standardized tests. District 202 did very well again, in spite of our ongoing growth, increasing expectations AND the bad economy. There are links on the front page of the district web site with much more information about both topics.
  • Speaking of important information, if you missed Monday's Connect-ED call regarding the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, please see the letters posted on the front page of the district web site. A committee of administrators, nurses and parents is working on a plan to deal with an outbreak, if it occurs.
  • Here is This month's Community Column from Dr. Harper, his first of the new school year.
  • Mark your calendars: the Plainfield Art League will host the "Art in the Park" fine art show at the Village Green Park in downtown Plainfield September 5, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local artists will offer fine art work ranging from paintings done in oil, watercolor and acrylic to pottery, photography and glass art. Concurrently, there will be a District 202 Student Art Show featuring works from students district-wide, and performances by student musical groups throughout the day.
  • Kudos to the nine District 202 athletes from Plainfield South High School and Drauden Point Middle School who competed in the Special Olympics Bowling Meet on Saturday, August 22, 2009. PSHS seniors Brandon Moody and Trevor Sturgeon are going to the Sectional Competition after earning first place finishes.

  Finally...
State Sen. Linda Holmes will host the second Autism Townhall Meeting from 6-8 p.m. September 15, 2009 at the Montgomery City Hall. This year's event is being co-presented by Giant Steps of Illinois. A representative from the state Department of Health Services is expected to attend, along with a representative of the federal government. For more information please call Laura Gillen in Sen. Holmes' office, (815)609-3711.
