Education Partners - August 7, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello!

As I write this, the rain is steadily falling, heading into a weekend of mid to upper-90 degree weather. That's terrific news for us gardeners, who have been waiting (impatiently) all summer for a helping hand from Mother Nature. Speaking of gardens, we offer our usual cornucopia of news this week, including these important points:

  • The Board of Education's August 17, 2009 regular meeting has been moved to August 27, 2009, because of some conflicting calendars. The meeting will be held at the district office, 15732 Howard Street, Plainfield. The public portion will begin at 7:30 p.m. as always.
  • We've posted the fourth quarter middle school, and second semester high school honor rolls on our district web site, under (appropriately) District 202 Excels. Congratulations to all of these students for their achievement. http://www.psd202.org/d202excels.htm ***NOTE: Please do not panic when you don't see honor roll information in the local papers. There are so many schools, and the newspapers have such limited space, that they often cannot publish this information for weeks or months after we send it. Instead, rely on the District 202 Education Partners as your main source for D. 202 news.
  • The new issue of "The Core" newsletter will be in mailboxes next week, but as always, the Education Partners get it first. This issue is chock full of important news, including key back to school information: http://www.psd202.org/community/newsletters/Aug2009.pdf
  • Middle School parents, check out your school's new-and-improved web sites! They're cleaner, less cluttered, and more user-friendly. Thanks to Webmaster Ryan Boyce for making these much-needed improvements. http://www.psd202.org/schools/level.htm#mid
  • We're implementing a "Virtual Backpack" system this year that will let non-profit organizations post fliers for students and staff online, rather than having to make and distribute hundreds and thousands of paper copies all over the district. This new system will save everyone involved a tremendous amount of time, money, work and resources. See the item below for more information.
  • The Jon Balke Student Art Gallery this month is featuring a very special exhibit of black and white photos by...retired District 202 educator and administrator JON BALKE! Yes, Mr. Balke, among his many other attributes, is an exceptional photographer. His work has been displayed all over the country. Please check out this amazing collection the next time you're in the district office.

Finally...

As we head into the new school year, it is becoming ever more clear that the economy - while improving - continues to hit our community hard. District 202 participates in the federal and state Free and Reduced Lunch programs, which lowers the price of lunch for qualifying students. If your family, or someone you know, might benefit from the Free and Reduced Lunch program, please contact Linda Lea, at (815) 577-4046, or llea@psd202.org. Click here for more information: http://www.psd202.org/departments/finance.htm We want to do everything possible to ensure that ALL of our students can learn, grow and achieve to their maximum potential.

Have a great weekend!

District 202 going "green," saving money with new "Virtual Backpack" flier system

District 202 is "going green"  and saving "green" for staff and the community - by changing the way it distributes materials from outside organizations to students and staff.

This fall, District 202 will implement a "Virtual Backpack" material distribution system that will let parents view, download and print fliers from non-profit organizations through the Internet.

District 202 disseminates fliers for non-profit organizations as a service to the community.

Under the old system, organizations had to make and deliver hundreds or even thousands of copies of their materials to schools for each approved request. Then school secretaries and teachers would have to distribute the materials to students.

"No more stuffing backpacks or take-home folders," said District 202 Director of Community Relations Tom Hernandez. "The new ‘virtual backpack\' will save a tremendous amount of money, time, resources and work for everyone involved," he said.

"This new system will help us be ‘good neighbors\' by continuing to share information with and from our community, in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way," he said.

Last year, the district approved 217 requests to distribute materials to students and staff.

Families without computers are encouraged to visit a local library to view fliers through the new online system.

Hard copies will also still be available in schools\' main offices, and posted on Community Bulletin Boards in each school for those families without Internet access.

The Community Relations department will still review and approve fliers to ensure they comply with Board of Education policy. Generally speaking, District 202 cannot promote or publicize for-profit organizations or events.

For more information please visit the district web site (www.psd202.org), click on "Community" and then on "Distribution of Materials."
