District 202 Education Partners, hello.
It's been a very busy, productive week in District 202, as evidenced by the long list of news and photos below. We hope your week has been good, too. First, a few important notes:
- Here are the September 14, 2009 ( http://www.psd202.org/board/boardnotes/0910/09-14-09.pdf ) Board of Education meeting notes. The Board will meet in special session tomorrow, Saturday, September 19 for its annual self review. This is a closed session meeting. The Board will also meet in open special session Monday, September 21, 2009 for a budget workshop. The agendas for both meetings will be posted on the district web site (www.psd202.org) under "Board Docs."
- We have posted a new page of information for our families and staff about the H1N1 virus, including several brochures from the Centers for Disease Control. This will remain on the front page of the district web site, and we'll add new information as it comes along. H1N1 Virus Information ( http://www.psd202.org/Dist202/h1n1.htm )
- We continue to celebrate our students' terrific achievement on last spring's state tests. This week we've posted another perspective on the "Magnificent Story of District 202," showing that our achievement continues to go up, even as our enrollment rises -- yet our instructional expenses are rising much slower. This makes for a great "return on investment for our community. The Magnificent Story of District 202: A Great Return on Investment ( http://www.psd202.org/Documents/return_on_investment.pdf )
- Likewise, we will continue to share information to help our community understand our challenging financial picture. New this week, a Budget Overview ( http://www.psd202.org/Documents/budgetoverview.pdf )
- Kudos and congratulations to Plainfield North High School seniors Travis Herrick and Benjamin Yu who are among 16,000 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists nationwide. More information is posted below.
- "Into the Beautiful North", by Naperville writer Luis Urrea, is the selection for this year's "The Great Read" community literacy program. This is a beautiful, charming and thought-provoking look at immigration, diversity and cultural change -- issues very familiar to the District 202 community. More information is posted below.

Virtual Backpack
We've posted four new fliers this week on the District 202 "Virtual Backpack." We have also tweaked the format and layout a bit to make the entries easier to read and download. Hope these changes are helpful. Check out the Virtual Backpack section of this newsletter to review and download this week's materials.
Finally...

PEHS Preschool Storybooks
|
PEHS sophomore Ricky Menendez works with a preschool student on the concept for a story. Sophomores in Laura Shoplas's English class were assigned preschool students to work with. The preschoolers are responsible for picking the topic, and then the sophomores have to write the story.
The sophomores will use what they have learned about narrative writing to create the story, while the preschoolers will draw pictures to supply the illustrations for the books.
