Education Partners - September 25, 2009

District 202 Education Partners, hello...

Welcome to the first official weekend of fall. Somehow, it feels a whole lot like the last few official months of summer...

Weird weather aside, hope your week was good. Ours was very busy, as always. Just check out all the news and photos below for proof. First, though, a few important notes:

  • The Board of Education will meet in regular session on Monday, September 28, 2009 at the district administrative center, 15732 Howard Street, Plainfield. The Board is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the proposed 2009-2010 budget at 6:30 p.m., then further discuss and vote on the proposed budget as part of the regular meeting, which starts at 7:30 p.m. The full agenda will be posted today on the district web site under "Board Docs."
  • Speaking of the budget, we sent a note earlier this week with very important information about the proposed strategy to eliminate the anticipated $16 million operating fund deficit. Here is that message again: September 23, 2009 - Special Budget Edition.
  • Kudos to District 202 Family Liaison and Translator Oralia Guzman, who is volunteering to teach computer training courses twice a month to Spanish speaking citizens at the Plainfield Public Library. District 202 serves its community in many ways. This is just one more.
  • Here is This month's Community Column from Dr. Harper. It should appear in local papers soon, but of course the Education Partners get it first.
  • The official 2009 State Report Cards are now posted on the District 202 web site under "Parents and Students," and on each school's web site. Click here for more: http://www.psd202.org/dist202/reportcards.htm including a special letter to the community: http://www.psd202.org/Documents/reportcardwraparoundlet2009.pdf
  • Kudos to Dr. Carmen Acevedo, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, who will present a workshop at the 2nd Summit for Courageous Conversations in Baltimore on October 10, 2009.
  • Circle the date! The 58th Annual Plainfield Community Homecoming Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009. The parade will once again run through the heart of downtown Plainfield, and will feature scores of floats, bands and other great attractions. Get a seat early, and enjoy with your family.
  • Congratulations to Plainfield South High School senior cross country runner Jake Ferris who set a new district record in the three-mile race at an event held last weekend.
  • Our friends at the Plainfield Police Department are conducting a citizen survey, and asked us to share it with our Education Partners. Your help would be very much appreciated: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB229MH9RDWNN

Bonnie McBeth Hop A Thon

Almost 800 Bonnie McBeth Learning Center preschool students at all District 202 preschool campuses "hopped to it” for a good cause on Friday, September 25, 2009.

The students participated in a school wide Hop-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The MDA uses donations to fund research for information on the causes and effective treatments for neuromuscular diseases.
